Wind power Generators

As indicated by their name, wind power generators make use of wind energy for generating electric power. Interestingly, centuries ago, people used mills that were powered by wind for drawing out the water and for pounding grain . But windmills that can be used for generating electricity were built only in the later part of the 19th century.

Today windmills and wind powered generators are used all over the globe for producing electricity. Due to major problems like: rapid decline in the availability of non-renewable sources like coal and other fossil fuels; pollution & global warming, people are interested in making use of the renewable energy sources like wind, solar power, etc., for generating electricity. In fact, people use devices like wind power generators for residential purposes.

Above all, one can even build a wind powered generator by himself. If you are also interested in building wind power generators by yourself, but don’t have enough time or expertise for building one – you can still make your own generator set by purchasing do-it-yourself kits. These kits come with everything one needs for building a generator device. You just have to follow the instructions and make sure that the ‘pieces’ given in the kit fit properly. This is a very easy method suitable for beginners, but it will be costlier than building the wind powered generator from scratch.

In case you want to save some money by building wind power generators without using kits, you should spare some time for the project. It would also be helpful if you have some mechanical skills and aptitude for understanding how to make a wind powered generator easily.

Making your own generator!

You will need wood, plastic materials (like PVC pipes), or metals for making the blades. You can even purchase ready-made blades from the market. But, make sure that the blades are made of durable material. Your blades should also be constructed from lightweight material, if you want your blades to give you more ‘movement’. Once you have acquired the blades, you will have to attach them together by using a hub or a centerpiece. The blades should be placed with equal spacing between them, as it helps in harnessing more power. The hub should be fixed to the shaft of a motor.

You can purchase or design a motor that would suit the size of your blades. You should also use batteries for storing the excess power generated. An inverter will help you convert the “”DC’ power generated into “”AC’ power that can be used by the appliances in your home. A control system can be used for regulating the power generation. Again, you can build your own electrical control unit or get one from the market. Finally, use wires for connecting all the components. Construct a mounting or support for the motor and the blades & set this up on a tower/base at a suitable place.

You can get more tips from suitable books/guides that give detailed information for building wind power generators. You can also browse the Internet for step-by-step instructions and pictures. But remember, if you want to use wind power generators for producing electricity, you should first check the speed of the wind in your area. Too much wind or below-the-mark wind power will not be suitable for producing electricity.

In case the wind speed is ideal in your area, install wind power generators for getting free energy for your own use, while lending a hand for preventing the depletion of non-renewable energy sources.
